Canon DiGIC DV MV850i 0.8MP:
The official marketing text of Canon DiGIC DV MV850i 0.8MP as supplied by the manufacturer
With its 22x optical zoom, DiGIC DV and 'Easy' mode, the MV850i combines quality with point-and-shoot simplicity. Integrating 16:9 widescreen mode, image stabilization and digital still capability.

Effortless and relevant
When designing the MV850i, Canon's engineers followed a simple maxim: for a technology to be worth having it must be both simple and useful. Features should only be available if they help you get that great shot, not cause you to miss it.

Easy mode
Go straight to full automatic shooting by switching on 'Easy' mode and within seconds of turning on your new camcorder you'll be capturing quality footage. An ergonomic design provides fingertip access to all key functions via carefully positioned controls. Menu navigation is intuitive, uncomplicated and available in 8 languages.

Wide Screen
For a real cinemaphotographic effect, the MV850i has high-resolution 16:9 mode for widescreen video. The 0.6x wide converter lens included in the box gives your images an even more panoramic feel.

Discrete and compact
At just 5cm wide, the compact body fits snugly in the palm of a hand. Despite its small size, the MV850i features a generous 2.4" colour LCD screen.

Quality lens, quality results
No matter where you are, or in what lighting conditions you are shooting, you need never miss out on those important details. 60 years of lens development give rise to a powerful 22x optical zoom with exceptional contrast and clarity. A razor sharp 1/6" CCD delivers high fidelity images even at the strongest magnifications. Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) keeps your footage steady and makes hand held shooting rock-solid.

You can even shoot when there is no light at all using Super Night mode with the built in White LED.

Natural results
Canon's DiGIC DV processor translates what the camcorder 'sees' into warm, vibrant tones that we love to watch. Grasses are greener, skies are bluer, skin tones warm and realistic.

Digital camera built in
The camcorder's true digital still functionality begins with a mechanical shutter, for blur-free photos worthy of a spot in any album. The MV850i connects to any PictBridge compatible photo printer to create quality photo prints without the need to first download to PC. JPEGs and up to 60 minutes1 of Motion JPEG are stored direct on MMC or SD memory cards.

1 Depending on type of footage and memory card capacity. Records up to 1GB clips.

Image sensor
Total megapixels *
A megapixel (MP or Mpx) is one million pixels, and is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras or the number of display elements of digital displays. For example, a camera that makes a 2048 × 1536 pixel image typically uses a few extra rows and columns of sensor elements and is commonly said to have "3.2 megapixels" or "3.4 megapixels", depending on whether the number reported is the "effective" or the "total" pixel count (as opposed to the 2048 × 1536 = 3,145,728 finished image pixels).
0.8 MP
Optical sensor size
Optical sensors are electronic detectors that convert light, or a change in light, into an electronic signal. They are used in many industrial and consumer applications e.g. lamps that turn on automatically in response to darkness. Optical sensors come in many sizes.
25.4 / 6 mm (1 / 6")
Lens system
Optical zoom *
Indicates the optical zoom capacity, which is the number of times that the picture can be enlarged with the optics of the camera.
22x
Digital zoom *
Indicates the digital zoom capacity, the number of times that the picture is enlarged thanks to digital technology.
440x
Focal length range (f-f)
Measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light. For an optical system in air, it is the distance over which initially collimated rays are brought to a focus. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length; that is, it bends the rays more strongly, bringing them to a focus in a shorter distance. For an optical system in air, the effective focal length (f and f′) gives the distance from the front and rear principal planes (H and H′) to the corresponding focal points (F and F′).
53.7 - 1181 mm
Filter size
A filter is a screen, plate, or layer of a substance which absorbs light or other radiation or selectively absorbs some of its components e.g. a UV filter to reduce UV light. Filters come in various sizes.
2.8 cm
Shutter
Camera shutter speed
Determines the length of time the shutter lets light pass through the lens to the CCD. Shutter speed and aperture together determine exposure.
1/2000 - 1/6
Display
Display diagonal *
Size of the display for this product, measured diagonally, usually in inches.
6.1 cm (2.4")
Display
The description of display that can includes display type, resolution, size etc.
LCD
Display resolution
The number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It is usually quoted as width × height, with the units in pixels: for example, "1024 × 768" means the width is 1024 pixels and the height is 768 pixels. The higher the number of pixels, the sharper the image.

Photo effects
Different effects that you can use to modify photos after they have been taken, such as colour filters.

Basically the same as the Canon 830i, the 850i uses the same body and optics of the 830i but for those that need a little extra oomph in the zoom department, it sports an extra 2x (taking it to 22x over 20x for the 830i) and 440x (against 400x) digital...
Good Easy to use, 22x optical zoom, value for money, PictBridge compatibility, included wide adaptor.
Bad We prefer optical image stabilizer, no external mic / accessory capability.

Only in our crazily converging digital world could we be testing a camcorder based on a CCD with less than half the resolution of some mobile phones. With just 800,000 pixels to call its own, the largest photo the MV850i can capture is smaller than m...
Good Lovely great zoom lens, Realistic price, Easy to use...
Bad Embarrassingly small sensor, Plastic body...
Bottom line A useful camera with useful features but dire styling and a puny sensor.
